An Alternative to Enron Culture
This educational and motivational video is based on ten sessions presented at Luther Seminary in St. Paul, Minnesota. The series is led by Gary Moore, a former senior vice president of Paine Webber who has counseled Sir John Templeton, Robert Schuller, and Jack Kemp. Moore maintains that “ethics is crucial as The Economist predicted conflict between the West and Islam a decade ago because, unlike true Muslims, we no longer integrate faith and wealth management.”
Among the topics covered in the videos are:
- A summary of Biblical, Greek, and Roman ethics
- A review of how Western economic thought developed
- A review of the exploding "faith at work" movement, by David Miller of Yale
- Balancing financial and spiritual bequests in estate plans
Omega even helps us to count America’s blessings, providing research from the Federal Reserve and sophisticated economic media that America’s assets are near $100 trillion while we worry about $7 trillion of mortgage debt and $2 trillion of credit card debt—only $3 trillion of which is owed to foreigners. It also offers research that economic pessimism is a major deterrent to both investing and giving.
Though it warns about America’s lack of fiscal responsibility, the final class argues that there is hope for the future. Nobel-laureate economist and religious skeptic Robert Fogel says our culture has entered a great spiritual reawakening. Management guru Peter Drucker predicts that we will soon organize our lives around the concept of responsibility rather than money and power. The Economist editorialized a decade ago that more responsible behavior will help to ease our tensions with Islam. And Sir John Templeton has predicted the Dow will likely rise to one million this century, with developing markets doing even better. Not only might that ease global poverty and strife, it might provide higher returns for all those boomers who aren’t saving enough.
